Basic laptop battery knowledge

With the popularity of laptops, more and more people concern about Laptop battery problems and often asked questions on this, now I take out some of technical staff and my own experience to share.

1. Do lithium batteries have memory effect?

Li-ion battery memory effect is very small, almost 0.

2. How to manage if we want to store the battery?

You should be charge a maximum of 90% of the electric and put it in the plastic wrap on a cool place.

3. The first charge should be sufficient for 12 hours?

This is applicable for Ni-MH battery model that does not have the battery control circuit, but until now, to a chip and charge control circuit discharge laptop batteries, that was a joke. When the battery is fully charged, the charging current is automatically cut off, even if you continue to charge 120 hours, the state would not be change. In general, even the slowest charging machine, six hours is completely filled, and the leave "charge" is just a waste of your time. Instead, you should first charge the battery after the power exhausted when you get a new machine.

4. How do we know the times we have charged?

For example, inside IBM's Power AC CESS IBM there is an option which can check the use times of battery, you can clearly know the first charge time and the battery health. Other notebooks must have the similar functions.

5. Whether we can directly use the AC power without a battery?

No. The reason is the Lithium-ion inside battery in a relatively quiet for a long time (relatively static means the battery without electricity or small amount of energy. A long time usually refers to 6 months), will completely lose their stored energy function.

6. How long is the battery lifespan?

There is no concept of time constraints, the lithium battery average life is a charge of about 400-500 times, there is definitely a quality problem battery if it’s lower than the figure.

7. Whether the new battery need to active?

Indeed, activation of the battery have been completed in the factory, the little power in laptop battery provided by the factory is to avoid natural damage to the battery. The activation of the battery must be in when there has no protect circuit, the lithium battery itself with a protective circuit, the aim of the designed block circuit is to avoid battery charge and discharge excessive, usually when the battery is fully charged, the charging indicator light turned off, the battery is no longer in the state of charge, so this time you plug in the charger has no meaning. We can see whether the battery is charging from the status of the battery, there is a simple way to determine if the battery in a charging state, there will be a certain degree of heat while battery charging, when the battery is full after one hour (battery charger Power plug temporarily don’t plug out), then you touch the battery, this time you will find that the battery is at room temperature, it is because the battery is not at the state of charge, and of course, there will be no heat generated.

8. Do we need to disconnect the battery when using an external power?

In fact, it depends on whether you need to charge the battery when you use an external power supply, and the frequency of battery charging is directly related to life, under normal circumstances, the times of Li-ion battery charging and discharging are fixed, number of charge cycles generally 500 or so, in most do not exceed 800. After we recharge the battery, the number of charge cycles will reduce. But now, many laptop manufacturers have considered the vulnerability of the battery, so they enhance the protection of the battery technology and will not charge if it does not meet certain requirements. Even if, it is recommended to disconnect the battery when you use an external power supply for a long time, because the battery temperature is also a killer, laptop could produce some temperature and this is very damaging to the battery. Of course, if you are unsure of your own batteries, I suggest you pull your battery down and then use an external power supply because not all batteries have a protection circuit. Another theory is that if your computer has software that can setting charge time by controlling the current, then of course you can connect the battery.

9. Does it can improve the battery capacity after the emendation?

The emendation is that when the actual capacity of the battery is not same with the control circuit, do a depth of battery charge and discharge operation, let the control circuit refresh the record, make it closer to the actual situation of the battery, which is a real manifestation of the capacity of the battery, rather than increasing capacity, a key factor here is the real capacity of the battery, if the actual capacity is higher than the control circuit record, the emendation can make the battery appear to increase the capacity, if the actual capacity of the battery is lower than the control circuit record, then the emendation will reduce the battery capacity, that is why so many people argue the for, please remember that the emendation is to make the real battery capacity, removing deviation between the battery and control circuit, as the shown capacity increases or decreases, is the state of the battery itself, rather than determined by your emendation.

10. Does the battery need regular calibration, totally charge and discharge once a month?

For the strong memory effect nickel-metal hydride battery, it is an essential task, but for lithium batteries, the cycle is too frequent, though Li-ion battery not completely eliminates the memory effect, it has significantly reduced the memory effect. if you use the battery very frequent, then you should recharge the battery when discharge to the relatively low (about 10 ~ 15%), but if discharge until the machines can not open(0 ~ 1%), that is a deep discharge which have a great wound to lithium batteries, usually do this operation once every 2 months is enough. If you rarely use the battery, then you can do such operation every 3 months.
